Malawi is a little known gem of a country in Southern Africa. It is a long and narrow landlocked country, covering more than 600 miles from north to south. Lake Malawi, nearly 370 miles long and up to 50 miles wide, dominates the countryside. When David Livingstone arrived at the lakeshore in 1861, he was the first European explorer to see the Lake, and was so awestruck that he started missions here.

There is no country in all of Africa that has its geography so sculptured and determined by Africa's Great Rift Valley, the largest single geographical feature on Earth. This ancient 3,100 mile long geological formation bisects much of Africa from Egypt to Botswana and boasts a bewildering array of habitats and lush vegetation. Towering mountains, lush, fertile valley floors and enormous crystal-clear lakes are hallmarks of much of the Rift Valley - and Malawi displays them all. Fertile soils are a result of the Rift Valley and evidence of this is to be found everywhere in Malawi. Throw a seed to the ground and a plant grows there.

Malawi's scenery is diverse and the habitats are varied. At its lowest point, the country is only about 120 feet above sea level; its highest point, Mount Mlanje, is 87 miles away and is nearly 10,000 feet above sea level. Between these altitude extremes, there are rolling hills, plateaus, cool misty mountains and wide-ranging scenery. Each of the many diverse habitats is protected within Malawi's nine national parks and game reserves - from elephants to orchids.

For those keen on experiencing African culture in all its complexity and beauty, Malawi is possibly the best country for this. Malawi is a warm and welcoming country that offers visitors wonderful scenery, fascinating parks and some of the friendliest people in Africa. It is no wonder that it is known as the "friendly heart of Africa."

Our focus in Malawi is largely around Lake Malawi as it is one of the most beautiful lakes in the World and has some spectacular beaches. Likoma Island is an island in Lake Malawi. Likoma Island is home to wonderful people and a stunning lodge called Kaya Mawa. The people, culture, history, and experiences on Likoma Island make it a truly special place in Africa.

Likoma Island is the driest part of Malawi and also one of the hottest.

January/February/March

Hot days with rain often in the afternoon or evening. The whole island becomes very lush and green and the views are fantastic. The rain dampens down the dust and puts out the fires of the late dry season and provides sparkling air and wonderful vistas of the forested shores of nearby Mozambique.

April/May

Dry warm days and pleasant cool nights with light breezes.

June/July/August

Dry with warm days and cool nights and occasionally some wind.

September/October

Hot to very hot days with warm nights.

November/December

Hot to very hot days with warn nights, perhaps some early light rain.

Malawi is easily reached via London, Johannesburg, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. From Lilongwe, the capital city, light aircraft transfers to lodges are easily arranged. As the people of Malawi are so friendly, driving from one location to another is a great way to experience some of the culture and hospitality of Malawi.

Malawi is a destination in itself, or can easily be combined with a safari in Zambia. Adding a beach stay at Kaya Mawa Lodge after a safari in South Africa, Botswana, or Namibia is also commonly done.

Likoma Island is a beautiful island in Lake Malawi. It is an island with wonderful people and stunning scenery. On Likoma Island people can walk or bicycle around the island, interact with local people, visit one of the largest cathedrals in Southern Africa, scuba dive, snorkel, swim, sail, partake in motorized water sports, and even go on excursions to neighboring Mozambique.

For those keen on experiencing African culture in all its complexity and beauty, Malawi is possibly the best country for this. Malawi is a densely populated country and interacting with the local people is a great experience. The people are friendly, curious, and always seem to be willing to chat. Interacting with the people and learning about the culture and history are integral to any trip to Malawi.
