Pristine, peaceful and incredibly beautiful, Haggerstone Island is an incredibly beautiful and remote island resort in Tropical North Queensland. Situated around 375 miles north from Cairns, near the tip of Cape York, Haggerstone Island is accessible only by chartered aircraft and boat ride. Haggerstone Island is just over 100 acres, is covered by lush jungle, and has white-sand beaches and blue lagoons. Bird life is prolific and the fishing, by rod, reel or fly, is amazing because of the abundance and variety.

Your hosts at Haggerstone Island are Roy and Anna Turner, they arrived at the uninhabited island over 20 years ago and have hand crafted the structures of various styles. While the small island is undeniably lovely, the Turner's backyard makes the resort unique; the lagoons and coral reefs of the northern Great Barrier Reef spread for hundreds of miles, virtually untouched by man, to the outer edges of the continent.

Guests come to experience adventure, seclusion and the unique island holiday that is Haggerstone.

Insider's Guide:

  • Access to untouched and unexplored portions of the Great Barrier Reef
  • One of the most remote and beautiful islands in the Great Barrier Reef
  • Terrific family run resort

Haggerstone Island has 4 guest houses each with stunning sea views. Each includes a bathroom and sundeck.

Beach Hut Villa

Barefoot, bleached and castaway are the impressions left by the beach hut. The beach hut is situated right on the beach and some distance from the main complex. A boardwalk leads down to the open shower and wash room standing among a coconut forest. Large canvas shutters open directly onto the beach where the sun sets over the open fire place.

Tree House

The Tree House features three separate buildings. The central room is a high gable structure situated half way between the bathroom at ground level and the bedroom in the tree canopy. A rope bridge stretches across a chasm to the bedroom. The circular bathroom is open to the surrounding jungle. The central room and bedroom have panoramic views of the lagoons and surrounding reef. This room exudes a true Robinson Crusoe feel!

Kwila Hut

Kwila hut is an open plan, hand crafted wood dwelling, nestled near the water, shaded under a canopy of Coral trees. Glass doors, polished floors and benches made from Daintree teak, along with New Guinea artifacts create a sublime setting. Wood shutters are on all sides to allow a cool sea breeze to flow through the room. A sundeck with the view past the Coral Trees to the surrounding reef completes this unique room.

Lagoon Hut

The lagoon hut is located toward the East side of the island and is nestled amid a grove of Coral Trees overlooking the sea. An open plan room with hand crafted wood pole hut is raised above ground level so as to afford spectacular ocean views across the lagoon. The lagoon hut has polished floors and glass doors with wood shutters open on all sides to allow a cool sea breeze.

The organic garden in the jungle is a pleasure to walk through as passion fruit competes with guado and snake beans. The vines of tropical butternut and squashes have to be coaxed away from beds of arugula and bokchoy. Basil, cilantro and parsley compete for space with lemongrass and ginger. Kaffir lime, mango and curry trees grow randomly along the paths.

Cooking is done on an open fireplace, using freshly caught fish, vegetables and fruit from the garden, and chickens and coconuts from an old plantation. Cooking in French-provincial style, Anna creates meals of wonderful freshness and taste. Served on the sand cay at the end of Haggerstone Island, the 'dining room' provides 360-degree ocean views.

For breakfast, papaya or banana are picked fresh off a tree and served with lime juice. Fresh toasted coconut flavors the home made muesli. The rich yellow yolks of the eggs are from free roaming fowls fed largely on coconut, fish and garden surplus.

Lunch may be of oysters steamed in the shell with sliced ginger and lemon grass or squid simmered quickly in sea water and then placed on a bed of arugula and drizzled with lime juice, olive oil and crushed garlic. Whole lobsters thrown in the coals and served with lime and crushed pepper can follow.

For dinner, fresh slices of coral trout marinated in lime and then cast into a bowl of freshly squeezed coconut cream; a red emperor is steamed with sesame oil, soy, ginger and garlic. Haggerstone Island prides themselves in a small but careful selection of wines from Australia’s renowned and boutique wineries. There is a true passion and love of cooking at Haggerstone Island.

Fishing

Fishing is good at all levels - rod, reel, spear or fly fishing, reef, ocean or river. As there is no human habitation for nearly one hundred miles, the grounds around Haggerstone Island are rarely disturbed. Bait is caught off the island beach. Spear fishing is an everyday method of food gathering. Reef fish and tropical crayfish are easily caught on nearby reefs and are easily accessed in the New Boat Jo Jo 111, which is 40 feet in length and has twin 700HP jet propulsion capable of 40 knots in shallow water. A full time fish guide is on hand to assist in making a fishing experience a truly memorable occasion.

Snorkeling

Snorkeling is excellent all year round. Two lagoons just off Haggerstone's beach put beautiful coral gardens right on your doorstep. Vast surrounding reef areas are easily accessible by boat from Haggerstone for skin diving and snorkeling. Nearby, an 1840s shipwreck has been discovered in a shallow reef garden. Its giant anchors, winching blocks and bronze keel bolts are all visible from surface snorkeling and make a memorable experience.

Bird Watching

Haggerstone Island harbors a dense and varied bird population. Sunbirds, honeyeaters, colored pigeons, eagles, kingfishers, finches, jungle fowls, pittas and many others have made it their home.

Beachcombing

The adjacent mainland beaches provide miles of adventurous beachcombing for a variety of shells and driftwood. Climb dunes to swim in parched freshwater lakes and then sand board back to sea level.

Helicopter Excursions

Helicopter access to world heritage listed forests on the mainland, topical waterfalls and a myriad of sport fishing locations allows specific targeting of species and the opportunity to see the Great Barrier Reef from the air. Explore locations difficult to access, fish lagoons and estuaries on the uninhabited mainland, dine in style on distant sand cays, and marvel at low level views of the wilderness surrounding Haggerstone.
