On the northwest corner of the Australian continent, in the Kimberley region, there is a place so far away from anywhere and so remote it was named Faraway Bay. Getting to Faraway Bay is truly part of the adventure, with access strictly limited to sea and air. Light aircraft will fly you in from Kununurra over some of the most spectacular scenery (including areas where outback scenes from the recent 'Australia' movie were filmed) to a private airstrip and then by 4WD for the final couple miles to Faraway Bay.

Hidden amongst ancient ranges overlooking a spectacular bay, Faraway Bay has led the way in nature-based low impact tourism. Stringent regulations designed to maintain the integrity of the environment were applied during the development phase of Faraway Bay and sound environmental management practices continue to direct the day-to-day operations - with the aim to provide a true wilderness experience.

Faraway Bay boasts a research library of local flora & fauna, birds, bush tucker and ancient rock art. Mirriwong Elder and Aboriginal spokesperson for Faraway Bay, Ju Ju Wilson, has significantly contributed to the bush tucker species list and guide Steve contributes to the flora and fauna species lists and through exploration of the region regularly discovers ancient rock art and archaeological sites. In 2005 Steve also discovered a live fresh water crustacean that is a species new to science!

One of the highlights in this stunningly beautiful area entails cruising by boat along the King George River with its towering sandstone cliffs to the majestic twin waterfalls. King George Falls is one of the most beautiful places in all of Australia.

In the evening it is time to relax and soak in the ambience of this remote and pure wilderness. Enjoy a fine Australian wine while enjoying freshly caught fish being cooked by a talented chef. On at least one evening you must treat yourself to the ultimate seafood dining experience of freshly collected oysters from the rocks combined with the northern delicacy of mud crabs.

Insider's Guide:

  • King George Falls - One of the most beautiful spots in all of Australia
  • Some of the oldest and best preserved Aboriginal Rock Art
  • Great barramundi fishing
  • Staff that truly goes the extra mile to ensure everyone has a great stay

Although simple, Faraway Bay provides eight spacious and comfortable cabins scattered amongst the natural bush setting offering privacy and 180-degree views of the spectacular cliff-lined bay.

Cabins Include:

  • King size beds
  • Overhead fans and lights
  • The 6 cabins feature en-suite bathrooms with flushing toilet and hand basin and a private outdoor solar heated spring-water shower.
  • Visitors are also generously provided with a selection of luxurious locally hand-crafted aromatherapy soaps and toiletries including shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers, after sun lotion, and natural insect repellent.

Faraway Bay provides a true remote wilderness experience with all the extra's to enjoy your stay in comfort and style. With a maximum of just twelve guests at any time, your privacy is ensured.

Eagle Lodge is surely Australia's most unusual kitchen and spectacular dining room. From your cliff-top perch feast on freshly caught wild barramundi, mangrove jacks, and reef fish, home-baked bread and exotic, sun-ripened fruit and vegetables picked and flown in from Kununurra's Ord River. All enjoyed with a fine Western Australian wine or beer.

You also have access to tea, coffee, food and wine at any time. Snack on one of the chefs freshly baked biscuits, fresh fruit or cheese and biscuits and enjoy the chefs picnics on excursions. Enjoy stories and laughter around the campfire and your favorite brew to welcome you at sun-up. Your special dietary requirements are easily accommodated by our resident chef.

Explore Faraway Bay

At Faraway Bay you'll encounter nature at her most immaculate. Everything appears refreshingly real, larger than life and with miles of coastline and seemingly endless horizons, the beach and the bush implore you to explore.

Since Faraway Bay shares the marine environment with saltwater crocodiles, swimming in the ocean and rivers is definitely off limits. From the safety of your boat watch crocodiles, sea turtles, Irrawaddy dolphins, whales, dugongs, manta rays and milk fish.

King George Falls

A visit to King George Falls is a must during a stay at Faraway Bay. One of the most beautiful locations in all of Australia, King George Falls has two waterfalls. Exploring by boat and then going for a hike above the falls is an amazing way to spend an afternoon.

Aboriginal Rock Art

The Faraway Bay area appears to have been a Mecca for Ice Age painters and it offers some of the most diverse examples of the mysterious Bradshaw rock art in Australia. Kimberley archaeologist Lee Scott-Virtue and Traditional Owner Ju Ju Wilson have worked together for years at Faraway Bay in an attempt to resolve the fascinating riddle of this intriguing art.

Experienced guide, Steve, has spent over 15 years in the Kimberley and seven at Faraway Bay and guided and accompanied some of Australia's top archaeologists and scientists, taking them to significant sites across the region.

Fishing

Fishing enthusiasts will find a countless variety of challenges with reef, bottom, bait-casting, ocean sport and estuary fishing. A full range of equipment is available and regular fishing tours are conducted with experienced guides. Faraway Bay is well known for great Barramundi fishing.

Bushwalking

Head overland by 4WD to bathe in billabongs, while birds fly overhead. Maybe you will spot a dingo, a family of brolgas or one of the many species of birds. Take a picnic lunch to a secluded beach where you can wander marveling at the shells and coral or just lay back and soak up the solitude.

Bird Watching

Faraway Bay is a paradise for birdwatchers. Everyone thrills to the daily experience of breakfast with the resident sea eagles and brahminy kites. Over 140 varieties of birds have been recorded to date with exciting sightings made by avid birdwatchers and regular visitors alike.

Star Gazing

Faraway Bay is one of the best places for stargazing. As there is no artificial light for hundreds of miles the high quality telescope can explore the infinite depths and beauty of the Southern Hemisphere well into the night.

Your guide will tailor a fantastic itinerary for your stay at Faraway Bay.

The Environment

To achieve and to monitor environmental sustainability, to help preserve Aboriginal rock art and to investigate flora & fauna, Faraway Bay regularly hosts and consults with a range of experts, resulting in a comprehensive ongoing research program including archaeological, cultural, ethno-botanical and habitat research. Your stay will help sponsor these ongoing scientific research programs as well as natural and cultural resource management programs.
